The flowers are grown in Uxbridge, Ontario, just outside of Stouffville (approximately 45 minutes northeast of Toronto). Ecological practices are used for all growing in the garden.
The twelve 3 foot x 100 foot garden beds are no-till, which helps to maintain soil health. Patches of untouched natural garden space are left for pollinators and other garden visitors (like toads) to enjoy.
No flower variety is ever harvested completely so that there is food and habitat for pollinators and beneficial insects to live out their full life cycle.
Being a small-scale garden, I'm able to produce the flowers from start to finish by hand. This is a benefit as plants get individual attention. Problems can also be detected in early stages, and the soil (and growing plan) can be naturally amended as needed.
It's important to support local and Canadian businesses, and many flower varieties are grown from Ontario seed suppliers. Any seedlings brought in come directly from local growers who produce their stock with care.
Additionally, using minimal water is an active practice, and this aim is supported by using all natural garden-grown mulch materials, plus cedar and locally grown switchgrass. Most of our flower varieties are also drought tolerant.
Markham Fairground community garden was home to the first flowers in 2021 and I fell in love with the experience. Since then growing Dewhurst has been fun, challenging & ultimately rewarding. I began with the aim of going to market in 2023, focused on building a new garden in 2024, and in 2025 squarely landed on producing flowers for drying. The current garden space has expanded to 3,600 square feet and I look forward to sharing more photos of the garden space here once it's in full bloom.
